Much like the recent storm hit the northwest the prior day, the home side overwhelmed United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled back-to-back WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to juggle domestic and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the schedule, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the away side, they looked fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in contrast, have fewer workload concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose energetic attack controlled and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them put three past the keeper in just over twenty minutes.

Final Period

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Former City player Park came most likely to score, striking the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and failed to produce a one shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any team who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
