Review: How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) – Unmatched Hilarious Instants on the Small Screen

Alan Partridge is in crisis! But then, who isn’t these days? When we last saw him on screen, Alan suffered a public collapse while fronting the entertainment series This Time, ending the series quite literally locked out of the BBC. In the opening of his independent production, the informative film How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), Alan discloses he’s encountered further difficulties by passing out in front of a guest at a business function for a Norfolk feed company. Hard moments, but such characters rebound: link personal issues to broader trends and see if you can get a series out of it.

Investigating Mental Health Trends

How Are You? showcases the beloved persona in roving factual mode, probing widespread emotional struggles that he believes is intensifying: “In old-fashioned language, it’s gone crazy!” His path includes dabbling in faith, meet up with former classmates, and enjoy therapeutic hikes, alongside facing his history. The first installment leads to a tense yet relieving meeting with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), an ex-co-worker from broadcasting days, and as the episodes progress, we’re shown unseen clips from Alan’s stints.

For Coogan and his long-term writing/directing collaborators, How Are You? represents a shift in direction. Whereas This Time pushed Partridge into new territory, How Are You? sometimes rehashes past ideas: as well as directly reviving old formats, the series echoes past satirical documentaries of the last decade. As his life intertwines with the subject matter, viewers will think of his podcast work.

Dual Personas of the Character

This leads to a minor issue. The character has two facets: Triumphant Alan (in prime roles) and Struggling Alan (without work), and despite Wilderness Alan leading the beloved show I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a more wistful Wilderness Alan has recently taken flight in books and audio projects. How Are You? brings us into his space and features Kelly as Katrina, a mismatched romantic partner from the podcast. Yet this heartbreaking narrative – he refuses to accept her betrayal with a pal and business owner – seems better suited to podcast pacing, allowing audience creativity to enhance humor. Without visuals, he seems more free: modern TV excels at pressuring the successful Alan and watching him implode, as happened on previous shows.

Humor in Mistakes

Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: in any format, he is the top humorous character in Britain, and temporary versions still offer huge comedy than other TV programs. How Are You? has Alan in multiple creative roles, which opens up his genius for sloppy errors and poor editorial decisions. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, it will be included, and he remains unchecked on misspeaking or other mistakes in commentary. The slight grimace we regularly catch as he strides out of shot aware that the segment was a failure always delights, and nor do the idents he’s made to fit between segments, highlighted by his awkward, caring expressions while gulping down a brew.

Striking Moments and Feelings

What could be funnier than his dumpster antics? Absolutely not. Visually he’s a feast too, with a poorly chosen hair shade, and his 2025 wardrobe featuring mustard chinos, black-and-white pundit pumps, assorted vests and an enthusiastic overreaction to the news that rugby shirts are back in fashion.

Moreover, the content reveals his deeper side that emerged with the current writers. Repeatedly, the show achieves emotional depth, where Alan’s lack of self-awareness reveals a sadness that briefly evokes strong feelings, before the persona snaps back in and we’re crying from laughter again instead. This works due to long-term affection: any version of Alan Partridge is always welcome back.

The show can be streamed and watched on BBC One.
