From Solo Parent Vacation Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Heaven: A Parent's Journey

After my relationship concluded, I believed holidays as a solo mother would be straightforward. Quickly discovered they were often extremely costly, otherwise seemed only suitable for “conventional” households, or were far too cheap that I came back more knackered than when I started.

Initial Holiday Experiences

My first attempt, tenting with friends, was fine until I had to pack up the tent. Four hours of wrestling with it under the sun afterward, I hated the outdoors. Next, the adventure trip for solo-parent households. The abseiling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunk bed ruined my spine. We tried a budget package in Tenerife, but the hordes of traditional families felt intense, and poolside conversations with fellow ladies fizzled out because I didn’t accompanied by a handy partner for their own husbands to chat with. A trip to Majorca with a friend and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was staggering.

Finding House-Sitting

Then, the previous fall, a friend asked if we could look after her dogs in Devon as she attended to a wedding. During a peaceful couple of days, we walked along the shore, and curled up near the fireplace in the evening. That led to pet-sitting for her friend in Dorset, which also went smoothly. Encouraged, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, where, in exchange for looking after people’s animals, you stay in their homes without cost. Within a few days, I’d arranged a ten-day pet-sit in Sussex, looking after a labrador called Buzz while the proprietors traveled overseas.

Our daily strolls provided the opportunity to discover breathtaking nature spots.

It was our first sit for unknown individuals, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we reached the beautiful spacious home and encountered the calm Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Each day's dog walks offered us the possibility to venture into magnificent scenic areas, and, once we returned back, we could unwind outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters in the BBC sitcom. There were any expensive overrated attractions to traipse through – instead, we perused bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and embarked on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had in years, and noticed my bond alongside my child Polly strengthen daily. I’m not afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed achievable again.

Could House-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Certain individuals want no responsibilities during vacations apart from choosing their next cocktail, are not into pets, or perhaps find it strange about sleeping in a stranger’s bedroom, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. However the soothing pace of ordinary living, with employment stripped out and new places to investigate, suits me perfectly.

This prevents me from slipping into total inactivity, a state that makes me experience twitchy and oddly hollow. Moreover, financially, pet-sitting acts as a life-saver for a single parent. Ten days break in a comparable property within the identical region we visited would set me approximately ÂŁ2,500 on Airbnb.

A New Outlook

As for residing in a another person’s house, I found it enriching. Although house-sitting is a exchange, it’s also an act of faith among strangers and creatures, that has brought out the finest version of me – my patient, loving and measured side, overflowing with appreciation for the people and locations we encounter. I’ve already lined up an additional four days away, caring for a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to attempt house-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of creative planning, we are able to see the globe from the coziness of home – it just happens to be someone else’s.
