A Denmark-based citizen has been found guilty of sharing nude segments from copyrighted films and television shows on the social media platform Reddit.

According to a law enforcement report obtained by BBC News, the anonymous man shared 347 clips of nude scenes in a Reddit group he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.

The country's police state he has been handed a seven-month suspended jail term for copyright infringement.

Legal analysts say the man was prosecuted under a seldom-invoked provision in Danish intellectual property legislation, with the court ruling that by removing the footage out of their intended setting, the accused had harmed the performers' "moral rights".

He has additionally been convicted of sharing more than 25 terabytes of protected digital content.

From March 2022 to May 2023, the man known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes featuring over 100 female performers.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

Per the Danish anti-piracy organization the Rights Alliance, his subreddit had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were encouraged to request excerpts of particular actors.

In 2023, advocates filed the case to the police on behalf of the affected artists, directors and producers, which resulted in the forum being shut down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, one of the actresses whose nude scenes were shared in the group, told Danish broadcasters at the time she felt there was a difference between appearing unclothed in a movie and being shown on Reddit.

The actress stated the posts constituted "exploitation".

The defendant was detained in fall 2024 and admitted guilty to the charges recently.

In a comment following the verdict, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader remarked the decision sent an "significant" signal "that infringements of artists' entitlements have consequences".

The verdict is viewed as unprecedented in the country for its use of the "ethical protections" section of the Danish Copyright Act, which states an creator's work cannot be used in a manner which infringes upon their standing.

Intellectual property specialist Dr Alina Trapova told BBC News the case was "unusual" for its emphasis on the harm to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them financially.

How the ruling could affect nations abroad is uncertain.

But she said there may be "more and more of these actions" in the future with the growth of artificial intelligence, where "the integrity of an individual's work might be compromised much more easily".
