Crew Member Reveals Depression After Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
