Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City
The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, implied that the municipality was prepared for a confrontation with US President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Boston.
Mayor Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to answer comments from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."
Much of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can reverse it.
She added, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." Wu concluded by emphasizing her commitment for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."
The President's Comments and FIFA Role
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."
He added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Past Threats and 2026 World Cup Details
Trump has made previous comments that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about moving games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to July 19 next summer.
