33% of British Parents Have Requested Special Educational Needs Screening for Their Children, Study Reveals

One in three parents have sought a SEN evaluation for their children, according to a poll that reveals a significant increase in demand for special needs support in educational institutions across the UK.

Rising Concern Over National Plans

The figures were released alongside increasing concern in England over national plans to reform special needs provision amidst growing financial pressures and a critical lack of dedicated special school places.

Study Shows Key Data

The survey of in excess of 5,800 caregivers discovered that 33% of caregivers with young learners stated they had sought an evaluation for possible special educational needs from their child’s school.

In England alone the figure rose to over a third. Earlier data showed that about a fifth of youngsters were classed as requiring additional support last year.

Individual Consequence and Monetary Burden

One in two parents who sought an evaluation said it was undertaken by the school, while 50% mentioned they were awaiting or had arranged a independent evaluation.

25% of those in the queue said they had been in the process for longer than a year.

This study also exposed the personal cost that a large number of caregivers face: One in seven reported they had given up their work to support their youngster, while 20% said they had stepped away from employment.

33% of guardians of children with SEN stated they faced “financial strain due to extra expenses” and growing strain at in the family, while four in ten confirmed they had encountered their own mental health problems.

Rising Diagnoses and Broader Problems

We have seen sharp rises in diagnoses of ASD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and speech and language needs among youngsters in the past few years, with language delays and behavioral difficulties rising sharply since the Covid pandemic.

The growth in SEND have been described as “staggering”, indicating “greater awareness of needs that were always there” through increased understanding and diagnosis.

Official Position and Future Reforms

The government official announced that a policy document detailing plans for reform will be issued in the coming months. Predictions suggest to widen SEN support within regular schools and promote the development of specialist units within them.

However, many families and advocates are concerned that the reforms will reduce the availability of EHCPs.

The department said it is “dedicated to bettering inclusivity and expertise in standard schools”, but faces an difficult journey over funding for increased SEN placements.

“In spite of the dedication of our schools, countless of households are suffering because our support framework is failing.”

“Families should not have to wait indefinitely to get the assistance they so critically need.”
